The Beginning is Awareness

Awareness is the critical component to successful weight loss:

I mean, are you aware of why you want that thing that is not on your eating plan? Are you using the taste of it – or the hit of dopamine that excites your brain - to avoid feeling boredom, anxiety, loneliness, rejection, grief? Are you using that dopamine hit to increase your sensation of fun, happiness, accomplishment, joy, love? If you are wanting something that does not serve you, ask yourself, “Why?” The answer may not be forthcoming, but the opportunity to figure it out is life-changing.

So much of what we do in our lives is buffering. We eat to ‘feel better’, when the complex carbohydrates/sugars don’t serve our bodies well as fuel. We watch TV to block out the unpleasant, negative chatter in our brains. We drink to dull our senses. We shop to get another type of dopamine hit. Some may say these are ways to relax and de-stress. How do we tell if the behaviors are good or bad? If the end result is negative – if there is a cost (detrimental to health, well-being, or finances) – the results are not self-serving, they are buffering to avoid addressing negative emotions. The solution is to become aware of the thoughts behind the negative feelings. Resisting the negative feeling and pushing it away will only increase the intensity. Allowing the feeling to be present, and realizing it is just a sensation in the body that cannot harm you, is extremely powerful, and the answer to stop overeating causing you to be overweight.

If you know this is the basis for your weight problem, we can overcome it and you can have a life beyond anything you imagine.

Let me help you formulate that life.
