How to Avoid Self-Loathing After Holidays

Hunger Mechanism, Overeating, Human Triad — The Model

Don’t start over – move on!

Thanksgiving is in our rear view mirror, and you likely have one of three thoughts:

  1. ‘’I ate so much food” — you might even add, “I hate myself”.
  2. I knew I was going to eat way too much — I need to start my diet over!
  3. I really am proud of myself - yesterday I showed great restraint and I am a rockstar!

If #3 was your thought – you probably wouldn’t be reading this blog. If you are thinking #1 or #2, you can do better.

Self-loathing is the most common reason women do not maintain their hard-earned weight loss. Continued efforts to ‘white-nuckle’ through the deprivation is exhausting and will ultimately result in failure. Starting over is also not the optimal choice. The answer is to say, “yep, not my best performance. How can I learn from this and move on with greater success?” Weight loss is not a straight line, and maintaining successful weight loss requires awareness of what results in progress versus setbacks. In our next blog we will talk about overeating and urges.

For today, see if you are aware of why you overate. Was Thanksgiving Day your ‘one opportunity’ to eat all those tasty foods (scarcity)? Were you unhappy or uncomfortable and chose to buffer your feelings with the dopamine hit you get from eating foods that don’t fuel/serve your body?

If you are aware, and assure yourself that you are truly worthy, acknowledge you feelings, and tell yourself, “I am worth caring for myself”, then move on.  Recommit to your goal of caring for yourself. If that seems too difficult or even impossible for you – I promise you I can help change your life.

Awareness is a critical component of successful weight loss. Overeating can be the result of over hunger, or over desire for food. The two have entirely different mechanisms, and controlling overeating requires understanding the difference.

I have lost weight at least a dozen times – Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Medifast, Ideal Protein, liquid diet, Atkins, South Beach, keto – you name it, I have done it. All of these diets shared one thing in common – as soon as I stopped the program, the weight I had lost came right back, and then some.

You get to follow a protocol (eating plan) that you design for yourself. If you are not continuing to lose weight, you will be able to make changes. There are some guidelines that will be suggested, and following them is likely to make you successful in your weight loss journey. That said, we are all different, and one size does not fit all when it comes to successful weight loss.
